WWA Wakeboard Worlds - Day 4 of 4By WSM Press Release The United States and Australia Take Home 2007 World Titles RENO, Nev. — Five of the most talented pro male riders in the world hit the water of Sparks Marina today for the Pro Men division finals of the Rockstar WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra. All five riders were vying for the title of the world's best wakeboarder. Rusty Malinoski, JD Webb, Erik Ruck, Phillip Soven and Shane Bonifay all gathered on the Supra towboat to ride along the shore and be recognized as the five finalists of the 2007 Wakeboard World Championships. After their introduction, the five shredders got down to business. Bonifay and Ruck were the first two riders off the dock and both put up a valiant effort in the finals to earn fifth and fourth place respectively. Then Webb and Malinoski hit the water. Malinoski had a great run, but Webb had the more impressive finish to take second place. Although Webb had an amazing run, ultimately, Phillip Soven (Longwood, FL), 18, took the top spot and claimed his second world title. "I'm stoked about this win, it's such a great honor to be recognized as a world champion," said Soven. "I've had such a great year this season and to add a world title onto it makes it so much sweeter." All eyes today were on Dallas Friday as the most decorated female rider in the world chased after her fourth consecutive world title. However, Supra team rider Amber Wing (Yowie Bay, Australia), 24, pulled off the upset to capture the 2007 world title. Friday finished behind Wing, while Nicola Butler of the United Kingdom took third place. 2007 is clearly Reed Hansen's year. The 17-year-old pro wakeskater out of Groveland, Florida captured the U.S. National Championship earlier this season and claimed the '07 World title during today's finals. The Jr. Men's Division has a new world champion, Mitch Langfield. Langfield (Narangba, Australia), 16, beat out five other riders to claim his new title. Shawna Hoffman (Butte Valley, CA), 15, took the top spot during today's Jr. Women's Wakeboard Division finals to take home the world title. The Boys Division hit the water today for their finals with Harley Clifford (Medowie, Australia), 13, claiming the world title. Jason Soven (Longwood, FL), 10, took home the world title for Jr. Boys Division. WWA Wakeboard Worlds - Day 3 of 4By WSM Press Release Friday and Adkison Both Look to Win Consecutive World Titles RENO, Nev. — The best pro riders from around the globe took to the waters of Sparks Marina today for their opening-rounds of competition for the Rockstar WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra. Among the world's best riders were Dallas Friday and Andrew Adkison, both of whom advanced to tomorrow's contest and are looking to capture back-to-back world titles. Friday, 20, emerged on the professional wakeboarding scene at an early age and has since proven to be the most accomplished female rider in the history of the sport. The 2004 ESPN ESPY winner has claimed five consecutive national titles, four X Games gold medals and countless victories on the Pro Wakeboard Tour, and she is seeking her fourth straight world title. Should Orlando native Friday capture the win at Worlds, she will tie Andrea Gayton's record of four for the most consecutive world championship wins and become the first American rider to do so. Adkison, 25, is a fifth-year pro rider and has established himself as one of the sport's premier athletes. In his five-year career, Adkison has won two world championships and two WWA World Series Japan titles, has captured the top spot at the 2006 Wake Games and was named Rookie of the Year in 2002. If the Tennessee native wins the 2007 championships, he will tie Shaun Murray's record for the most world championship titles in the pro men division. Both Friday and Adkison will take to the water tomorrow for the fourth and final day of competition. The Pro Wakeskate Division met today for their semifinals. Reed Hansen (Groveland, FL), 17, continues to show why he is the current U.S. national wakeskate champion, as he again led his division with a score of 68.33. The Boys Division hit the water today for their semifinals with Harley Clifford (Medowie, Australia), 13, pacing the division on the day with a score of 73.33. Noah Flegel (Lighthouse Point, FL), 9, led the Jr. Boys Division today during the semifinal round of competition with a score of 54.44. The Parks' Double Or Nothing Stage Is SetBy Sean Dishman Riders came out firing on Monday in Orlando as 18 wakeboarders challenged for three open spots at the third and final qualifier for the Parks Double Or Nothing double up contest. Located at the same venue as Feet On Fire on Clear Lake at "Krazy Kelmans," many hammers went down, but the heelside 900 seemed to be the move of the day as Adam Errington, Dean Smith and Jimmy LaRiche all landed theirs to secure the top three spots respectively. Nick Weinacker had some valiant attempts at a backside 900, which may soon go down, but not on Monday. Event organizer Parks Bonifay was impressed with the riding and served up the meat as driver, timer and judge. "No one was scared to go big today. Adam Errington's 9 was the biggest I've ever seen." Bonifay also is looking forward to the main event in September. "It just happened that three 900's won at this qualifier. But for the main event, leave the 900's at home, unless it's backside. Riders are already working on mobe 720's, toeside backside 720's, new double rolls and 1080's. I'm also psyched to see some new faces in the mix." During the week of September 10, the main event will be put on by Red Bull at an undisclosed location in Orlando the week before Surf Expo. It will be pulled by the MasterCraft X-Star and also will be supported by Fox Riders Co. The invited riders will be: Past Champions 1. Danny Harf - ‘04 Best Trick 2. Chad Sharpe - ‘04 Biggest Air 3. Josh Sanders - ‘05 Best Trick 4. Parks Bonifay - ‘05 Biggest Air 5. Andrew Adkison - ‘06 Best Trick 6. Rusty Malinoski - ‘06 Biggest Air 2007 Wildcards 7. JD Webb - Wildcard 8. Cable Wakeboard European Championships 2007By EAME Cable Wakeboard Council Press Release It was more then a successful weekend at the Cable Wakeboard European Championships at the Lido of Almere (Netherlands). The sun was shining bright and 118 riders from 15 countries really enjoyed this competition. Spectacular action was brought to more than 8000 spectators from the riders of each category. Especially for the German team, it was a very successful time – three gold, two silver and three bronze medals was the impressive balance. In the Girls and Boys category, Anna Laura Brabaender and Frederic von Osten won the first medals for the team. The Girls were ruled by local rider Mayanka Jansen from the Netherlands who did two impressive runs on her home cable! In second place came Victoria Young from the UK. She was pushed forward from an enormous crowd of British guys at the beautiful beach side. In Boys it was a very hard decision for the judges. Frederic von Osten from Germany, who at last won the title, was in front with 65.83 points followed by Szebasztian Szolath from the Hungarian team with 63.50 points and another local guy, Yves van den Hoff. In the Junior Ladies category, Maxine Sapulette showed why she was elected as rider of the year in 2006. With two phenomenal runs, she was ruling her category. The others had no real chance against her and she had an advance of more than 10 points before the second Junior Lady, Ginger Pfennings from Germany, and the third, Vivien Katona from Hungary. Efi Levy is the name from the Israeli rider that won the Junior Men category. It was a very clear result because Efi did two impressive runs and showed James Young (UK) and Stephan Kraus (Germany) who is leading the Junior Men. The most spectacular and most interesting category was the Opens. The spectators could not believe what they saw at the Open Ladies and Open Men category. A phenomenal Pauline Dyrschka starting for Germany got on the highest position of the podium just before Kinga Horvath from Hungary and Milicia Gluvajic from Serbia. A huge German crowed was putting forward their rider. In the Open Men, the local spectators went totally crazy when Mike Ketellapper was getting ready for his run. It should have been his day – over 8000 people putting him forward to give his best. And he did it, but crashed in his first run at one of the last obstacles. It seems as if it was not his day - like at the last competitions – in his second lap he also crashed at the first obstacle – the slider. Because of the high risk, he wanted to go in this second lap and because of the whole Lido waiting for his crazy tricks, the judges and organisers decided to let him do one more lap to show what he is able to do. Of course this lap was not counted for the scores, but the local people from Almere went totally crazy when he came in the last corner of the track, directly next to the crowed. At the end it was Nick Davies from UK - who is known as Sick Nick because of his totally mad runs – who won the gold medal in the Open Men. He did more tricks on this Cable than ever seen before and was leading with more then 20 point before Laurent Peyrichou from France and Peter Pascal Schmidt from Germany. The last category was the team scoring. It was a very lean calculation, but at least the German team was leading the scores before the team of UK and the home team of the Netherlands. All in one, the organisers and officials decided that this was the best European Championships that the division cable had ever seen. 3707 Views
